A new historical marker has been unveiled in Huntsville's courthouse square to celebrate the significant contributions of early Black business owners in the region. This marker specifically highlights the Brandon family, whose masonry firm operated from 1887 to 1921. Over the decades, the Brandon family constructed an impressive 14 buildings throughout North Alabama, leaving a lasting legacy on the architectural landscape of the area.
The initiative to honor the Brandon family and other early Black entrepreneurs is part of a broader effort to recognize the vital roles that these individuals played in shaping the community. The marker serves not only as a tribute to the Brandon family’s craftsmanship but also as an acknowledgment of the challenges faced by Black business owners during a time of segregation and limited opportunities.
Community leaders and historians gathered for the unveiling ceremony, emphasizing the importance of remembering and celebrating the rich history of Black entrepreneurship in Huntsville. The marker stands as a reminder of resilience and the enduring impact of Black businesses in the region's development.
